Santa Águeda: Catral's chapel beside the Acequia Mayor

en Published 20 September 2026

Catral's Santa Águeda is a neighbourhood at the edge of the Acequia Mayor. Its chapel stands on a small square, modest in scale but important to the town's calendar. The annual devotion draws people out from the centre into the huerta and makes the canal, paths and neighbouring fields part of the visit.

The local story

The chapel and fiesta belong to a landscape made habitable by drainage and irrigation. That context gives the procession more meaning than a detached festival photograph: people move between the parish town and a smaller rural sacred place. Catral's own account records a long devotional history and the relationship of the Santa Águeda settlement to landholding near the old marshes.

Plan the visit

Walk the neighbourhood and view the chapel from the square; enter only when it is open for worship or a stated visit. Respect private farm lanes and keep clear of the Acequia Mayor's banks. If visiting for the February celebrations, check the current municipal programme for procession routes and times. On an ordinary day, the quiet canal edge gives a calmer introduction to Catral's huerta.

How it connects

The watercourse leads the eye towards Dolores and the reclaimed fields that also shaped San Fulgencio.
